Dehradun works well both as a destination in its own right and as the gateway to Mussoorie, Rishikesh and Haridwar. In the city itself, the Forest Research Institute's colonial-era building and museum, Robber's Cave (Guchhupani), and the Mindrolling Monastery are the usual stops, alongside the cafes along Rajpur Road.
Because it's now barely half a day's drive, Dehradun suits a relaxed day trip on its own, or as the first stop on a longer loop that continues up to Mussoorie.
